International artists Grennan and Sperandio come back with new sculpture to demonstrate the ever changing face of Burnley

Burnley’s industrial past has once again been represented in a modern fashion, this time in an innovative new sculpture at Towneley Hall.

International artists Grennan and Sperandio have created the new piece as part of their year long project ‘Town/House’ at Towneley Hall, which has so far seen Burnley’s nightlife and coat of arms re-represented in this unique way.

This is the acclaimed artists third sculpture in a series of seven, which sees them merging items from the collections at Towneley Hall with everyday things found in the town, to create unique artworks that represent contemporary Burnley.

The piece, entitled ‘Victoria Apartments’, portrays a 19th Century statue of a bronze woman struggling with a quilt, which the artists designed to represent the relationship between old and new ideas of domestic luxury in post-industrial towns.

Victoria Apartments is the new name of an old mill in Padiham, where contemporary luxury apartments are now found in the shell of nineteenth century industry, regeneration that has happened all over Burnley, demonstrated in this piece.

It is located in Towneley Hall’s Burnley room from 22nd August, which displays aspects of the history of the town. The sculpture is on display until 23rd October, when it will be replaced by the fourth sculpture, which the artists are busy creating right now.

Councillor Jeff Sumner, Burnley Council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Culture said:
“Grennan and Sperandio continue to create interesting pieces of art which give people from both in and out of Burnley the chance to look at the town in a different light.
“We know that this art will get people talking, and hope it encourages people to come to Towneley and see what its all about.”
