As part of LET Project, an empty Blackburn shop will be transformed into an opera house.

As part of LET Project, an empty Blackburn shop will be transformed into an opera house when the former Vall Hall's Jewellers becomes the venue for a mini-opera.

The 20 minute performance called 'Songs for Silenced Voices' is based on the experiences of a soldier who is left homeless when he is unable to cope on civvy street.

The piece performed by arts organisation Collective Encounters, aims to expose the shocking statistic that a quarter of Britain's homeless community is made up of ex-service men and women.

The free performance is one of a number of events being performed throughout the week on the theme of homelessness.

They will be staged at both the King William Street shop now the LET Shop and in a similar venue in Liverpool.

The project aims to improve the self-esteem, confidence and employability for homeless people and to help homeless people have their voices heard.

'Songs for Silenced Voices', which is also the title of the week long residency, includes an exhibition called 'Hollywood Homeless' of photographs taken by homeless men and women.

There will also be a workshop being run for local homeless people and a performance by people who were formerly homeless called 'Songs from the Streets'.

In addition, there will be a workshop looking at the relationship between the arts and health and a performance exploring the challenges faced by people suffering with dementia and their carers.
