Journey Box

Artist Weston Hammond, a former chef, landscape architect and cowboy and now a successful artist and storyteller, spent a day in the grounds of Turton Tower creating art work which celebrated the natural surroundings, food culture of the area and the enjoyment of the outdoors.

Journey Box became a record of the day, of the many walks and of the environment around the Tower. Anything could go in the specimen box - feathers, seed pods, blackberries, leaves, lichen, fungi, small handwritten notes saying where and how things were found, what the weather was like, what animals were seen, a poem, recipes and sketches.

The staff at Turton Tower have continued to put the box out into the grounds and recorded the objects placed in the sections which reflect the change from Summer to Autumn.
