Liberating Empty Terrain launches in Hyndburn

Accrington Town centre will be one of the spaces across Pennine Lancashire which will be transformed this summer through an exciting new project called LET (Liberating Empty Terrain).

LET aims to use town centre spaces to showcase the work of creative industries from across the Pennine Lancashire region. The spaces will be a mix of outdoor spaces and empty shops. The project aims to bring artists’ work direct to the public to enjoy, in places they may not usually expect to see such activity.

Hyndburn Borough Council is launching the Accrington part of the project with an event on the 8th May from 11am to 4pm in the grounds of St James’s Church, Accrington. The Portable Pixel Playground will be visiting Accrington and asking young people to find a new way to ‘play’. The Portable Pixel Playground was created by Folly in Lancaster and is bit like an adventure playground, a bit like a work of art, and a bit like a computer game, the playground has been designed to allow young people (and inquisitive adults!) to use everyday technologies in fun and creative ways, providing them with new, interactive and hands-on experiences of art and technology.

Over the coming months, Accrington will be the inspiration for a number of activities including a new ‘mapping exercise’, temporary art installations and exciting new creative drama pieces. Community groups and local youth groups are invited to get involved. For more information visit the Civic Arts Centre’s website www.civicartscentre.co.uk. All briefs will be posted on there and information for groups who want to get involved will be available.
