Working in partnership with the Haworth Art Gallery and Hyndburn Council, Creativity Works have invited artist Sarah Jay, to take up residence in Accrington market.

Creativity Works would like to invite you to work with them on a new art project taking place this summer in Accrington. Working in partnership with the Haworth Art Gallery and Hyndburn Council, Creativity Works have invited artist Sarah Jay, to take up residence in Accrington market. An artist with national experience Sarah has an interest in working with communities’ stories, heritage collections and craft techniques.

This August Sarah will be turning her sights to Accrington for inspiration. Working with the Haworth’s collections ranging from the world renowned Tiffany glass to the belongings of the Haworth family, Sarah has designed a project that will tell the stories of the often overlooked Anne Haworth. Anne and William Haworth were the brother and sister who built the house that is now Haworth Art Gallery, originally called Hollins Hill, and it was Anne who left the house to the people of Accrington when she died.

Often recorded as doing good work with the community such as organising comfort boxes to be sent to the soldiers during the war, Anne’s stories and the stories of the house as a family home are often forgotten. Through a series of workshops and drop in sessions Sarah will collect the stories of the community, use objects that Anne treasured and explore the Haworth’s lost stories to produce new work that will commemorate Anne’s life. The finished work will be displayed during an exhibition of commemorative objects from the galleries collections launching in the 4th of September.

There are a number of different ways to get involved with this project, and Sarah is eager to meet as many people as possible. Sarah will be in Accrington market at set times between August 6th and 28th. She will be running a mixture of drop in sessions and set workshops where you can take place in a range of activity, for example printing from original printing blocks from Haworth Art Gallery’s collections.

To find out more information have a look at the project blog www.annehaworthsfan.wordpress.com , or to arrange a visit call Sarah on 07507888785. Funded by the Arts Council and Renaissance North West this is an exciting project that gives you the opportunity to work with a national artist.
